Disscusion
In my hypothesis I stated that the egg if placed in a substance it would turn the color of that substance and swell in size. My hypothesis was correct. In the experiment our egg turn bright fushia and swelled dramatically. This happened because of Osmosis. There was more water outside the egg than inside so the water rushed inside causing it to swell. The reason for the coloring of the egg is, that we put food coloring in the water so that you could see the Osmosis happen.
In this experiment we first put two eggs in vinegar so that we could expose its semi permeable membrane. Then, after 24 hours in the vinegar, we took the eggs out and placed them in separate beakers. One beaker had plain water with red food coloring in it. The other beaker had strawberry yogurt. The eggs were kept in the beakers for 24 hours. Then we took our observations of the eggs. Our variables were controlled because we were very careful to make sure that we measured the substances very carefully. Also some of the variables that we did have had already been dealt with by our teacher. An example of this is, the eggs. We had been given the eggs so she had already checked them to make sure they were as identicle as possible. We made sure that nothing was overlooked
In my first data table I showed all my observations that took at certain times. Before the egg went into the red water in had a yellowy shell. After it had a bright fushia shell that was cracked a bit. The inside of the egg had a light red tinge to it. However, the egg that was put into the beaker with the yoghurt had very little change. The only change that I noticed happened was that the outer shell was covered in yoghurt. In my first graph I showed how much more weight the egg gained in the space of 24 hours. The eggs gained weight because the cells were trying to create equilibrium with the water surrounding the egg. In my second graph I showed the volume of the water before and after the egg was put in. there was about a 50ml difference in both of the beakers. However, the beaker with red water had the most difference.
I believe that this experiment was both valid and successful. The one thing that I would change about the experiment is that I wouldn’t use yoghurt because it was too think to go through the semi permeable membrane of the egg. I do not believe that there were any problems identified in the experiment.
